The American dog tick, commonly known as the wood tick, is present throughout the U.S. but not in the Rocky Mountain region. These ticks are brown with grayish-white markings and can grow from 3/16” to 5/8” when engorged. Their bodies are oval and flat, with six legs as larvae and eight as adults.
While they typically target dogs, these ticks can also bite humans and spread diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Their activity peaks in spring and early summer. Regularly checking pets and maintaining your yard can reduce the chances of an infestation.
Brown Dog Ticks, distinguished by their reddish-brown color, commonly attach to dogs and thrive in warm climates like California. These ticks can also bite humans when dogs aren’t around.
As adults, they are about 1/8″ in length but can grow up to 1/2″ when engorged with blood. These ticks have six legs as larvae and eight as nymphs and adults. Swift removal from pets is necessary to prevent potential health problems. Regular inspections of your pets and keeping their environments clean can help prevent infestations.
Pacific Coast ticks are commonly found in shrublands and along trails from Oregon to Baja California, making them prevalent in Mission Valley. These ticks are most active in cooler months, particularly April and May. They primarily feed on large mammals like cattle, deer, and horses, though they also bite dogs and humans.
These ticks are known to spread Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and bovine anaplasmosis. Livestock can also be affected by tick-bite paralysis. Around 11% of adult Pacific Coast ticks carry bacteria that cause Pacific Coast tick fever, which is often mistaken for Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
The Western Black-Legged Tick is common throughout the Pacific Coast states, including British Columbia. It is the main carrier of Lyme disease in these areas. These ticks typically inhabit forests, grasslands, and areas near water, but can also be found in scrubby habitats. Though related to the Eastern Black-Legged Tick, they are more prevalent on the West Coast.
Adult ticks are most active from early winter through early summer, while nymphs are abundant in April through June. Nymphs feed on small creatures like rodents and lizards and rarely bite humans or pets. Keeping your yard clear of debris and maintaining vegetation can help reduce their presence.
Mission Valley Pest Control starts tick control with an in-depth inspection of your yard. Our technician will focus on identifying tick-prone areas like tall grass, dense bushes, and shaded spots, which are common tick habitats.
We also inspect areas where your pets frequent, as these spots are often gathering places for ticks. This detailed inspection allows us to tailor our treatment plan, ensuring your property remains tick-free and safe for your family.
At the start of our tick control process, we discuss whether you require indoor, outdoor, or both types of treatment. For homes with pets, we typically advise treating both areas to maximize effectiveness. This ensures we provide a treatment plan that’s tailored to your specific needs.
Our technician will then inspect your yard to pinpoint tick hotspots. We apply moisture-activated granules that cover up to half an acre and provide long-lasting results. If your yard is larger, additional areas can be treated at a nominal cost. Indoors, we use a B&G sprayer for a focused application. This thorough method guarantees effective tick control from day one.
We offer a complimentary two-week follow-up after your initial tick treatment to ensure that any newly hatched ticks are handled. Our technician will check both indoor and outdoor treated areas to make sure all ticks are gone.
During this visit, we’ll reapply treatments as needed to disrupt the tick life cycle and prevent future infestations. Our aim is to keep your home and yard free from ticks, ensuring the safety of your family and pets.
We proudly serve Mission Valley and its surrounding regions, working hard to keep your homes and businesses free from pests. Our team values these communities and is committed to delivering excellent service and lasting results.
