Billbugs are small beetles in the weevil family, typically measuring from 1/2 to 1 inch in length. They have a distinctive long snout, much like a miniature elephant trunk, and come in shades of gray to brown. Their larvae are legless, white, and resemble grubs, living underground and feeding on plant stems and roots. Billbugs commonly attack grasses and crops in gardens. Adults cut into plant stems to feed and lay eggs, while the larvae do more damage below the surface.
Billbugs usually produce one generation per year, with adults overwintering in leaf litter and lawn thatch. Eggs laid in grass stems hatch in one to three weeks. Blister beetles, soft-bodied and measuring from 1 to 2.5 cm in length, can range in color from ash gray to bright yellow with black stripes.
